Materials Engineering
Materials engineers develop new materials and processes that enable entirely new technologies or improve existing products. This involves knowing the structure of materials from the atomic level upward, understanding how the structure determines the useful properties, and devising ways to manipulate the microstructures to produce the desired properties. Materials engineers may specialize in ceramics, metals, polymers, or electronic materials, but they are always involved in those cutting edge technologies where performance is pushed to the limit.
