Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Since our founding in 1865, Worcester Polytechnic Institute has focused on educating people for life and work in our technological world - helping them improve themselves and their communities. WPI is a pioneer in project-based, outcome-oriented education in science, engineering and management. We teach students how to apply this knowledge to real-world problems and how the solutions make a difference to the world around them.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The engineering programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Distance Learning at WPI

WPI's distance programs are designed for working professionals seeking to advance their careers and education through part-time graduate studies. Through the Advanced Distance Learning Network, WPI delivers the same courses, content and material that you would receive on campus. Faculty work with an instructional design team to determine the best technologies to use in the delivery of their courses via distance. This approach to distance learning ensures that courses are kept current and the latest technologies are used. Few distance programs match their on-campus counterparts like WPI.

Environmental Engineering - Master's, Graduate Certificate

WPI's program helps environmental engineers advance their understanding of a number of technical fields and assists them in effectively managing projects involving complex managerial and regulatory issues. Students can choose from two concentrations:

  • Water Quality Systems
  • Waste Remediation Systems

Emphasis is also placed on contemporary topics as well as emerging research applications.

Master of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering
The master's program consists of 11 courses with no specific core courses - students are free to select a mix of courses that best meet their career and professional development goals and may take courses from other WPI graduate programs with approval of their advisor.

Certificate of Graduate Study in Environmental Engineering
A certificate of graduate study is obtained after the completion of four thematically related courses. All courses taken toward the graduate certificate may be counted later toward the master's degree in environmental engineering.

A B.S. degree in civil, chemical or mechanical engineering is normally required for these programs. Students with a B.S. in other engineering disciplines as well as physical and life sciences are eligible, provided they meet additional course requirements.
